How many times have you been in the middle of a project when Windows quietly downloads an update — only to LOUDLY interrupt you every 10 minutes — until you restart your computer for the update to take affect? This quick fix allows you to manually set the time before Windows politely "reminds" you to restart your computer — until you have a natural break in what you are doing. It only applies to Windows XP Professional and should only be used to buy a little time to finish the task at hand. This advise is just that.. Advise. Use it at your own risk. A reboot is required for this change to take affect.

Click Start

Click Run

Type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotes) then hit OK

Then, navigate through the following menus: Local Computer Policy>>Computer Configuration>>Administrative Templates>>Windows Components>>Windows Update>>Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations

Where it says "Wait the following period before prompting again with a scheduled restart (minutes) — change the value to something like 240 or 480 (which will prompt you every 4 or 8 hours).

Click apply

Click OK

*Restart computer for changes to take affect.

*You can force the changes to take affect immediately, by clicking Start>Run>gpupdate.exe /force >hit enter.

Windows Updates are a handy and important feature for the overall security of your computer, especially if you are an average user with limited computer knowledge. The downside: sometimes Windows "patches" screw things up… Not every computer configuration is the same, so a one-size-fits-all approach can sometimes have a negative impact on your computer. Recently, I installed a brand new computer system for a client. Finished installing the Windows updates. Upon reboot, we received the following error: "The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL" — which crashed the Realtek HD control panel! This computer wasn’t even a day old, so you can imagine how frustrated we were… Fortunately, a little research revealed another windows update which you can find by clicking HERE that solved the problem.
