You must restart your computer for the updates to take effect.
How many times have you been in the middle of a project when Windows quietly downloads an update — only to LOUDLY interrupt you every 10 minutes — until you restart your computer for the update to take affect? This quick fix allows you to manually set the time before Windows politely "reminds" you to restart your computer — until you have a natural break in what you are doing. It only applies to Windows XP Professional and should only be used to buy a little time to finish the task at hand. This advise is just that.. Advise. Use it at your own risk. A reboot is required for this change to take affect.
- Click Start
- Click Run
- Type "gpedit.msc" (without the quotes) then hit OK
- Then, navigate through the following menus: Local Computer Policy>>Computer Configuration>>Administrative Templates>>Windows Components>>Windows Update>>Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations
- Where it says "Wait the following period before prompting again with a scheduled restart (minutes) — change the value to something like 240 or 480 (which will prompt you every 4 or 8 hours).
- Click apply
- Click OK
- *Restart computer for changes to take affect.
*You can force the changes to take affect immediately, by clicking Start>Run>gpupdate.exe /force >hit enter.
